At the latest post-earnings conference call of Microsoft, its Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Satya Nadella dwelt on the cloud business of Microsoft. This particular project of the global software giant is being touted as highly important. This cloud computing service has been named Azure. However, it is still lagging behind Amazon Web Services that seems to rule the roost in this particular domain. Nadella was asked by a financial analyst from Evercore ISI as to whether he was okay with the present position of the company compared to where it was at the end of the previous financial year. It seemed that the question had touched a chord with Nadella.
A lengthy tirade
In response to said question Nadella seemed to open into a long tirade regarding why the query was basically a short-sighted one. In general, people consider the cloud computing services of Microsoft to be the second best option to the services being provided by Amazon. Nadella told the analyst that he understood where the latter was coming from, that he completely understood that they judge people by what they have done of late. He said that was a fine way of looking at things and the company was going to keep a tab on it. However, he also opined that was not how things were supposed to work.
The way of Microsoft
Nadella made it quite clear that Microsoft looks at what he termed as generational opportunities. He said that the global tech giant viewed these opportunities as shifts that happen once in a generation and ones that need to be maximized at any and every cost possible. Nadella also explained that one feature of these opportunities was that it can take a considerable amount of time to realize some revenue from the same. With this statement, the CEO of Microsoft also made it clear that his organization was in it for the long haul and was averse to taking a short-term view of things.
Missing the future
Nadella also stressed that this was true for all markets such as cloud computing. He said that at times people miss the future by focusing too hard on the present. They miss the chance to dominate and mold the future in their preferred ways. He said that he never saw it from a narrow perspective, from one-quarter to another. He did not even view things from a year to the next.
The approach matters
He also said that things such as cloud computing and augmented reality were generational opportunities. The CEO also outlined the danger of a short-term view in such situations saying that if they focused too much on the now with these they would miss what is going to come in the days ahead. Augmented reality is a field of technology where digital images are projected on to the real world. This is also yet another major project for Microsoft. The company thinks that one day it could exceed the likes of smartphones as well.
